Why Pactful exists
I lost $900 to a client who scammed me. PayPal couldn't help.
I had a client I'd worked with three times. Everything went smoothly. Then one morning I woke up to two PayPal disputes claiming I never delivered anything. The next day, he opened a third. That was $900 worth of completed work, frozen.
I scrambled. Sent screenshots, emails, everything I could find. I even had emails from the client confirming he was happy with the work. I'd asked him to send one after every payment, and he always did. I thought I had a shot.
The first verdict came back in the client's favor. I lost $280 plus PayPal's dispute fees. There were still $600+ in open disputes. Meanwhile, the client was changing dispute reasons and submitting evidence I couldn't even see, let alone counter.
I called PayPal support multiple times over several days. Every agent agreed it looked like a scam. But they weren't the ones making the final decision. Eventually, they connected me with someone from the disputes department. She was direct.
"Ok, do you have a contract to submit as evidence?"
I said no, but it was obvious I was getting scammed.
"I agree. But do you have a contract or service agreement of some sort?"
I already told you I don't have one.
"Then I can't help you. Wait for the verdict. But remember — every transaction on PayPal requires a Service Agreement or a tracking number."
She knew I was being scammed. She told me as much. But without a contract, the emails didn't count. I lost all $900.
That conversation stuck with me. Not because she was wrong. She was right. I didn't have the proof. And that's the problem: most freelancers don't. They do the work, send an invoice, get paid through PayPal, and assume good faith. Until a dispute proves them wrong.
